SMALL
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
In order
to create a cash-based economy, ALAD developed micro-enterprise
business and development projects serving over 18,000 people in rural
communities. These projects allow the community to earn a cash income
which is then used to sustain other community projects: the library,
the non-formal education/preschool centers, and the health care post. Recognizing
the enormous role that women play in furthering development in Africa,
ALAD places special emphasis on increasing women’s access to credit
for small business loans. Working supportively as members of women’s
cooperatives, poor women can earn income to care for their families.
The women employ others, thus increasing the income earning potential
and knowledge throughout the community. Armed with literacy, numeric
skills and small loans, women are working in pepper farming and
pottery production with the hope to expand into bread baking and other
areas.
